Qingming Festival

Overview:Qingming Festival, also known as the Outing Festival, is one of China’s important traditional festivals, usually between April 4 and 6 in the Gregorian calendar. This day is not only the day to worship ancestors and sweep tombs, but also the time to go outing and enjoy the spring.

Origin of Qingming Festival

Qingming Festival originated from the tomb worship custom in the Zhou Dynasty and has a history of more than 2,000 years. Its formation is closely related to the Cold Food Festival. It was originally mainly used to worship ancestors, and later gradually became a festival that combines ancestor worship and tomb sweeping with getting close to nature.

Main customs of Qingming Festival

  • Tomb sweeping and ancestor worship:Family members go to the ancestor’s tomb to clean, place offerings, burn paper money, and worship their ancestors to express their remembrance and respect for the deceased.
  • Outing:During the Qingming Festival, when spring returns to the earth and grass and trees sprout, people choose to go out for a picnic to enjoy the vitality and beauty of nature.
  • Tree Planting:Tree planting during the Qingming Festival has a long history. It is both a respect for nature and a hope for the future. It is called “Qingming Tree Planting”.
  • Kite Flying:Flying kites during the Qingming Festival is a traditional activity. People believe that flying kites can eliminate diseases and disasters and pray for peace.
